From 1970 to 2022, average charges for higher education rose for both public and private institutions by about 6% annually. However, the annual growth has slowed to 4% in the last decade. Private institutions have seen a steeper increase in costs compared to public ones. This steeper increase reflects higher tuition and fees at private schools, driven by greater reliance on tuition revenue and less state funding compared to public institutions.
