Once the sanctuary of the elites, over the past thirty years, universities have morphed into servicing the mass market. In the context of diminished public resources and market demands, universities have incorporated technology into most parts of their educational delivery. Many traditional universities offer fully online courses and represent a significant customer segment for edtech firms and technology companies alike.
There are many university 'segments' from Ivy League, to open and distance learning to those who's remit is in particular disciplines such as engineering or technology. Some 'mega' universities are emerging off the back of massive global online enrolments and others are joining forces to create alliances, share resources and students.
