Hydrogen is used in a number of industrial processes such as in the production of steel, fertilizers, plastics and is used in oil recovery. Hydrogen can be used to generate heat, propulsion and electricity in fuel cells. Producing low carbon or carbon free hydrogen therefore opens up many decarbonization opportunities and provides a pathway for governments to achieve ambitious climate goals. Electrolysers that separate hydrogen from water using electricity are a key technology in producing green hydrogen. Electrolysers are energy intensive equipment and therefore need to be powered by renewable or low carbon energy sources to make hydrogen production carbon free.
