A microgrid is a local energy grid capable of operating independently from the main power grid, either permanently or temporarily. For decades, microgrids have been used in critical infrastructure such as hospitals and military bases. However, since 2010, the price of solar PVs, batteries, connection and control systems have declined making microgrids an attractive solution to powering suburbs, rural communities, commercial buildings and even industrial sites. This evolving technology has the ability to supply clean, stable energy to its microgrid, enhance resilience and reduce energy costs.
