Smoking is a significant global health issue, resulting in 7.4 million deaths annually. Ischemic heart disease ranks as the primary cause of smoking-related fatalities, with nearly a quarter of all ischemic heart disease deaths (2 million) attributed to smoking. In comparison, asthma and lip and oral cancer contribute to a lower number of deaths (0.2 million). The crisis has extended beyond individuals, impacting families, communities, and healthcare systems. It widens health disparities, particularly among vulnerable populations. Addiction hinders public health initiatives while increasing healthcare costs and reducing productivity globally. However, governments have been responding to the issue with initiatives ranging from stricter regulations to smoking, anti-smoking laws in enclosed public places, and campaigns.
