Global share of primary energy consumption by type of fuel, 1965-2022
EIA
30 Jan 2023
Between 1965 to 2022, there has been a 12% decline in the share of fossil fuels in primary energy consumption globally. This shift is mainly driven by the growing adoption of renewable energy sources, aimed at reducing global carbon emissions and enhancing air quality. The decline in fossil fuel usage has seen significant milestones, such as the UK's 15% reduction in coal consumption in 2022, resulting in the lowest demand for coal in 266 years. This shift was highlighted as wind turbines generated more electricity than gas for the first time in the first quarter of 2023. Meanwhile, in Australia, the power sector saw declines in fossil fuel usage alongside an increase in the share of clean power in total electricity production to a record high of 38%. The costs associated with deploying renewable energy sources like solar and wind have seen a significant drop over the last decade which has allowed them to be more competitive against fossil fuels.
