Average minutes per week of dedicated planning time by teachers in the United States, 2023

Compared to high schools and secondary schools, elementary school teachers in the United States dedicated 49 minutes less per week to planning. While core subjects taught in elementary schools require less time, subjects in high school and secondary education are frequently more complicated and specialized, demanding teachers to arrange in-depth lessons that cater to the different needs and talents of older pupils, as well as plan for assessments, grading, and offering guidance on college and career planning, all of which require extended planning time from teachers. Given the critical role that planning time plays in the larger context of education and learning, variations in the amount of time allocated for preparation may have an impact on student results and the efficacy of instruction. It interacts with variables such as resource allocation, curriculum standards, and socioeconomic disparities, all of which influence education and the quality of learning opportunities for students in the country.
