East Asia and the Pacific had the highest hydropower energy capacity additions in 2022 (25 GW),  significantly outpacing other regions. That's over nine times the amount of Europe’s 2.7 GW, which had the second-highest capacity. This is primarily due to countries like China in the East Asian region, which are leading in electricity production through hydropower. All other regions contributed less than 2 GW of new hydropower capacity in 2022.
