Over the last decade, US coal consumption declined by over 40%, largely due to the rapid growth of renewable energy sources like wind and solar, which became more cost-competitive. Additionally, many coal plants were shut down as utilities shifted to cleaner energy alternatives. Stricter environmental regulations and public pressure for sustainable energy also accelerated the transition away from coal.
